More Waiting

Posted in feelings on 25 March 2008 by R.Pad

*sigh* So Noot has to get a copy of her police record from the Brunei embassy (she worked there as a seamstress for several years). That’ll take a few weeks to get. Then I’ll have to do the intensely nervous waiting thing again. This was seriously the most nerves I felt since I did that live shoot on the Monday Night Football post-game show on ABC.

Interviews

Noot’s interview is just minutes away. She’s nervous. I’m nervous. We both have jittery stomachs. I wasn’t able to eat much today due to nerves. Kicking the morning off with three cups of coffee probably wasn’t my best idea. Of course, this morning’s mini-crisis didn’t help.

Speaking of which, the passport photo situation was solved. Mod, my friend Andy’s girlfriend, is a uni student in Bangkok. We chat on Y! quite a bit. I emailed my passport photo to her, Noot went to an Internet cafe, Mod let Noot log into her email (talking her through the process), and the problem was solved. I feel very lucky that Mod is friends with Noot and me.

I had a phone interview today too. It was with a big Internet company that hosts a lot of videos and has the words “Tube” and “You” in its name. The interview went well and I’m pretty sure I rocked the list of test items they sent to me. I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m hoping for this one. It wouldn’t be the most interesting job I ever had, but Google money and benefits sound awfully appealing.

Most of my items from today’s list are completed. I just have to do a little bit of writing and pack. The little trip I’m going on is getting pretty interesting. I’m grateful for the work and I’m really looking forward to it, but I want to laugh at how the whole thing is being managed. I want to step up, argue, and do more, but it’s not my place to say anything (plus I might offend someone) and I’m getting paid the same either way. It seems odd to me that people in management positions can’t see the larger picture and fret over the small things.

So I forgot one thing for Noot’s interview documents — a copy of my passport. Kit kindly scanned a copy for me, but finding a computer-illiterate girl help at an Internet shop at 11:30PM is proving to be problematic. Hopefully we’ll figure something out or the embassy won’t mind this little omission. The government already has a copy of my passport from the initial application…though I don’t think that means anything to the Bangkok embassy. *sigh*

I Just Want to Get Paid

Posted in work stuff on 24 March 2008 by R.Pad

So I’ve been following up with two vendors that are late with checks. Both situations (in terms of getting paid on time) are pretty lame, but one is pretty comical.

Company “A” basically said that the guy I worked for gave my invoice to the wrong guy, who in turn gave it to the right guy very late. Unfortunately, the CFO (that signs all the checks) is on vacation and they won’t be able to send me anything until April 7. Now, I can understand papers going to the wrong people — it happens. I can’t understand a company that only has one person with financial signatory power. Surely there has to be someone else that can cut a check, right?

Company “B” is just too lame for words (in terms of getting paid on time). Here is a breakdown of the events.

I’m Forbestastic

Forbes is definitely an outlet that I never imagined I’d be writing for. Then again, my work life (actually my personal life too) has gone in all kinds of direction I never anticipated. Anyway, here’s a Top 10 list I wrote up for Forbes.

If you have a Digg account, I’d appreciate you Digging the article too!

I sent off a hefty batch of paperwork and records for Noot’s visa. Her interview is very close and I’m getting nervous about it now. It should work out fine, but there’s always a chance something goes wrong. I got something notarized for the first time in my life. I couldn’t find the notary public at first, but Rannie helped me out with emergency Internet mapping. After photocopying the documents, I sent the whole batch off.

Noot’s visa interview is the day before I leave to THQ’s WrestleMania trip. This is usually my favorite trip of the year. One of the reasons is that Justin and I get to hang out and enjoy something we both dig. He’s not going this year — which is ironic since he works on the game now — and it’s not going to be the same. It would have been excellent to have been with him to either celebrate Noot getting her visa (though he doesn’t drink so it wouldn’t be a crazy celebration) or cry on his (now scrawny) shoulder if it doesn’t work out.

HBK’s line last night killed me: “Edge and his…uh…two Edge guys.”

Two Links for Monday

This is a pretty hilarious story about a MacBook Air owner missing his flight because the TSA didn’t believe it was a real laptop. That’s pretty amazing. I know the TSA is there for our safety, but its rules are often senseless and it hires some pretty inept people.

Apparently there are drugs in our drinking water. That’s pretty scary. I drink a lot of water every day (though most of it is from a water cooler — wonder what the drug content is there….). I cook with water. Obviously, I shower with water. It’s kind of freaky that there are unwanted antibiotics, mood stabilizers, and sex hormones in it.

Dumb Americans

What’s wrong with this country?!? First, the stupid people of Ohio (sorry Tony) vote for the wrong person, dragging out the democratic race longer than it ought to run (it’s just extremely difficult for Clinton to win mathematically, at this point). And tonight, Danny Noriega got voted off of Idol. I’m going to miss that kid. His fay pizazz was very entertaining and he look liked an amalgam of my friend Raina and her boyfriend.

This is Raina.

Raina

John, her boyfriend, is the guy all the way on the right.
